core lifters

Boart Longyear core lifters are made of high-quality alloy steel and are heat-treated to increase strength, toughness, and wear life.

SMOOTH

  • Ideal for use in competent ground conditions
  • Increased grip area with the core sample

SLOTTED

  • Ideal for use in competent ground conditions

  • Increased grip area with the core sample

  • Also known as the “Brown Style” core lifter

FLUTED

  • Ideal for use in broken ground

  • Increased flexibility; ideal for use when encountering irregular core

  • Also known as a “broached” core lifter

core lifter cases

Boart Longyear™ core lifter cases are made of a high-quality alloy steel that is specially heat-treated to increase strength, toughness, and wear life. Available in Q™, QTK, Q-P, Q3, and QTT models. The specialized Q-P/QTT core lifer case works with Q-P/QTT bits to route fluid flow to the cutting face – further improving core recovery.

Nitrided Inner Tubes

Nitriding offers a 5x improvement in corrosion resistance, 2x the wear life, lower friction, and does not flake off, compared to hard chrome coatings. The ultimate in productivity, especially in broken or blocky ground.

Eliminate Blocking In Broken Ground

Nitrided inner tubes feature a low-friction surface, eliminating core jamming in fractured ground.  This dramatically reduces the risk of early tripping in challenging conditions and delivers more core per shift.

Lower Friction Greatly Eases Core Recovery

In addition to efficiencies in the ground, nitrided tubes also improve the experience at the surface. Extracting the core from the tube no longer requires tight clamps and unsafe mallets.  Even the most fractured core samples slide into the tray with a simple push-rod and minimal force.

Longer Lasting

Since nitriding is a transformative process – not a coating that can crack and flake off – the useful life of our new inner tubes ranges far beyond standard steel or chrome-plated inner tubes.  The extended life translates directly into lower operational costs and less on-site inventory.

Standard Outer Tubes

Boart Longyear core barrel kits and innertube groups are available in A, B, N, H, and P, as well as two standard lengths of 1.5 M / 5.0 FT and 3.0 M / 10.0 FT. These lengths refer to the inner-tube length, which dictates the maximum amount of core that can be retrieved in one drilling run before the inner tube must be retrieved.

Note that optional couplings and adapters are available for Q™ and QTK systems to extend the core barrel in 1.5 M/5.0 FT or 3 M/10.0 FT multiples. Also, optional inner tube couplings and extensions are available to allow extended-length reaming shells.

Full Hole Outer Tubes

Full-hole outer tubes are designed for operation in competent ground formations where hole accuracy is top priority. The oversized outer diameter and four-flat design keep the core barrel system tight to the hole while allowing adequate cutting flow.  The increased wall thickness increases the tube’s stiffness, reducing deflection under drilling loads.

Boart Longyear A, B, N, and H-size core barrel systems can be configured as full-hole wireline coring systems. This system is comprised of standard core barrel components, the full-hole locking coupling, and the outer tube. When ordering a core barrel kit, these two optional full-hole items must be selected.

LOCKING AND ADAPTER COUPLINGS

Boart Longyear couplings are made out of heat-treated alloy steel for improved strength and have hardened shoulder faces to resist abrasive wear from mating latches, maximizing latch reliability.

Stabilized locking coupling uses laser cladding technology instead of welding to achieve a greater tungsten carbide density with very little heat input, which preserves strength. Comparative laboratory wear testing has shown an improvement of over 10 times (ATM G65), which typically translates to more than double the wear life in the field.

BULLNOSE SUBS

Boart Longyear bullnose subs are made of heat-treated alloy steel and feature several features to maximize rod and sub life.

Oversized external torque shoulder to resist wear and deformation from repeated make and breaks.

  • Curved lead-in nose guides the sub into the rod box, eliminating unwanted “stabbing” damage.
  • Case-hardened pin threads to maximize thread life.
  • For deep-hole applications, use separate bullnose subs for rod tripping and drilling to avoid rod damage.
