Driftmaster Overview
Unique to Boart Longyear, the tapered Driftmaster profile provides an increased material cross-section at the base of the threads.
The asymmetric geometry was designed to create “PowerAngles” that minimize stress concentrations with a greater contact surface.
Combined with the wear resistance associated with carburizing heat treatment, the DriftMaster™ thread geometry maximizes resistance to wear under the harshest drilling conditions.
Improve productivity with a tapered thread profile offering superior rod-bit make-up and breakout characteristics. This key thread feature results in more drilling time.
Design
Optimized strength, fatigue resistance, and wear life.
High Stress Leads To Fatigue Failures
Steel is a material with a fatigue limit (stress value threshold)
An applied stress above the fatigue limit with sufficient load cycles will eventually lead to failure
A reduction in the applied stress can lead to a significant increase in product life
Driftmaster Threads Reduce Stress For Extended Life
The tapered thread profile provides a larger cross section at the high stress location (more steel where it is needed)
The unique thread profile further reduces the thread root stress compared to standard designs
A +25% reduction in applied stress leads to an exponential increase in the fatigue life offered by DM28 and DM35
